Our team was tasked to develop online training for our company’s Safety Policy. We decided that since content is static and has a large audience it was a great opportunity for us to create something unique.
- Provide and interactive way for employees to review required sections of the company safety policy that are applicable to all employees.
- Illustrate and highlight the company’s safety philosophy and culture.
- Emphasize that the safety rules and culture apply at home as well as work.
There is no actual ‘instructional environment’ for this course. The learner is dropped into a conversation with their neighbor and asked questions about our policy. Luckily the learner has our Safety Policy loaded on their Smartphone! At any point the learner can open the phone and the Safety Policy will automatically jump to section being discussed. The conversation leads to a site visit where the learner must help a neighbor improve safety at their company.
A common problem with content in (particularly Safety Training) is trying to ensure everything is ‘safe’ in every photo. By placing the learner at another company it freed us of worrying about that quite as much. It also lets us place the learning in the position of being the expert rather than a student.
Creating this learning was a real team effort.
After an initial meeting to determine the style and effect we wanted Deborah Burnley wrote the script.
Jeremy Phelps created a style for the photos that kept things informal and allowed us lots of wiggle room for our limited Photoshop skills.
Using the Articulate SDK James Kingsley created a custom Articulate player and Flash files for the map and Smartphone. He also assembled the course.
Along the way Angela Lansky and Vicki Sweger helped with testing and reviewing.

It turned out to be a very effective SDK for flash videos. James Kingsley merged different toolkits to build an extract file to regulate the time sequence and delays. https://www.7dollaressay.com has launched a new set of code for the university students to modify the written code according to their needs. Basically a very productive idea!
